Almost every threshold in Spanish immigration is set not as a sum but as a percentage of one of two indicators: the IPREM for no lucrativa, family reunification and studies, the SMI for the digital nomad visa. Enter your family size and the table shows the threshold for every permit whose rule sets one: the formula, the amount per month and per year, the period it covers, and the article of the rule with the date we checked it. So the permits can be compared side by side without switching anything.
What is counted and what is not. The arithmetic of the threshold. Whether your source of income counts depends on the permit and on consular practice: see the income requirement guide and the meeting. Permits without a formula in the rule are left out of the table, and it says why underneath.
How much you need to show
| Permit | Formula | Per month | Per year | Over what period | Rule |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Non-lucrative residence (no lucrativa) Permit guide | 400% IPREM | 2,400 € | 28,800 € | Funds for the whole term of the permit: 12 months at first application, 24 at renewal at first application: 28,800 €, at renewal: 57,600 € | RD 1155/2024, art. 62 checked 05/09/2026 ?Minimum at the time of application or renewal, art. 62.1. The total is calculated for the term of the permit requested, art. 62.2: the first card is for one year (art. 61.4), the renewed one for two (art. 64.7). Salary from a current employer does not qualify: the permit does not allow work. |
| Digital nomad visa Permit guide | 200% SMI | 2,849 € | 34,188 € | Monthly income, shown by payslips or invoices for the three months before filing | Ley 14/2013, art. 62.3.f (UGE) checked 05/09/2026 ?The percentages come not from the Act but from the UGE document "Solicitudes iniciales para teletrabajadores", citing art. 62.3.f of Law 14/2013. Gross amounts, before tax and contributions. A shortfall can be covered by savings for the whole term of the permit, shown by a bank certificate. The SMI is set in 14 payments and UGE applies the percentage to the annual figure: 200% is 34,188 € a year, that is 2,849 € a month, not 2,442 €. |
| Entrepreneur (start-up) visa Permit guide | 100% IPREM | 600 € | 7,200 € | A monthly figure. The funds must be the applicant's own: either savings or a regular source of income. Guarantors' documents and declarations of financial support from third parties are not accepted | Criterios Ley 14/2013 (DGM), criterio 1.3 Consulado, enero 2025 Consulado, medios propios checked 06/09/2026 ?The percentages come not from the Act but from the Directorate-General for Migration criteria for applying Law 14/2013, criterion 1.3: 100% of IPREM for the applicant and 50% of IPREM per family member. The consular sheet for entrepreneur visas repeats the same figure (updated January 2025). The funds must be the applicant's own or a regular source of income. Highly qualified professionals, ICT and researchers have no own-means requirement: their sufficiency is shown by the contract salary. The SMI-based formula (200%, 75%, 25%) belongs to the digital nomad status but does appear in UGE requests: if an amount is named in a request, answer in its wording. There are two ways to evidence this and they do not mix. Savings: a bank certificate in the applicant's name showing the balance and its availability, plus the account history, since the consulate may ask where the money came from and for the account movements over the past year. Regular income: the source itself (a contract, dividends, rent) and the receipts under it. A bank loan is accepted but must be evidenced by a contract signed by the parties stating the full amount. Guarantors and third-party declarations of support do not count: the funds must be the applicant's own. UGE practice is stricter than the consular wording: in our own cases a balance certificate for the applicant's personal account was accepted, while a company account and receipts from counterparties were not, even where the applicant was the sole owner of the business. |
| Family reunification Permit guide | Needs at least one family member | The sponsor's periodic income, assessed by nature and regularity, not a lump sum | RD 1155/2024, art. 67 checked 07/10/2026 ?The sponsor shows the income: 150% of IPREM for a unit of the sponsor and the first relative, plus 50% for each further one. For minors art. 67 allows a reduction (cases of art. 66.1.c and d) at the immigration office's discretion, and the same article sets the reduced threshold through the IMV: 110% of the annual amount for a family of two, plus 10% for each further minor. | ||
| Studies (estancia por estudios) Permit guide | 100% IPREM | 600 € | 7,200 € | Monthly for the whole stay, the total depends on the length of the programme | RD 1155/2024, art. 35.h checked 05/09/2026 ?If accommodation is prepaid for the whole stay, no maintenance amount is required, art. 35.h.1. The ministry sheet (hoja 1) applies the same to family members. Tuition does not count towards these amounts. |
| Doctoral studies (researcher permit) Permit guide | 50% SMI | 712 € | 8,547 € | Calculated on an annual basis. The funds cover the period applied for and the return to the country of origin | UGE, instrucciones estudiantes de doctorado Criterio DGGM 2/2026 checked 06/09/2026 ?Since 7 August 2026 doctoral study is processed not as education but as a residence permit for research under art. 72.2.b of Law 14/2013, through the UGE: criterion DGGM 2/2026 recognised doctoral study as research activity. The UGE filing instructions state a minimum of 50% of the SMI on an annual basis, rising to 100% of the SMI where dependent family members apply. The instructions give no further figure for family, so the calculator does not multiply it by the number of members. The application is filed by the doctoral student or by the university. The programme must appear in the RUCT register at Doctor level and the tuition fee must be paid by the filing date. The 790 038 fee under item 7 is EUR 23.76. |
| Job search or business project after studies Permit guide | 100% IPREM | 600 € | 7,200 € | For the whole 24-month term of the permit, by a declaration of means at first application: 14,400 € | Ley 14/2013, disp. adic. 17 (hoja 20, 09.2025) checked 05/09/2026 ?A 24-month permit without the right to work. With accommodation prepaid, the applicant threshold is 50% of IPREM and the family amounts are waived: so says the ministry sheet updated in September 2025. |
Basis of the calculation
IPREM 600 € per month, 7,200 € per year (2026):
Ley 31/2022, disp. adic. 90,
IPREM for 2023, carried into 2024, 2025 and 2026 under the budget roll-over: no new budget acts have been passed, checked 05/09/2026.
SMI 1,221 € per month in 14 payments, 17,094 € per year (2026):
RD 126/2026, art. 1 y 3,
SMI for 2026: €1,221 per month, €40.70 per day, at least €17,094 per year, checked 05/09/2026.
Annual amounts are monthly IPREM × 12 and the annual SMI. The 14-payment annual IPREM, 8,400 €, applies only where a rule refers to the SMI on an annual basis, and immigration formulas do not use it. Amounts are minimums and gross.
What this does and does not do
Only the arithmetic of the threshold set by the rule. Whether your source of income counts depends on the permit: salary from a current employer does not qualify for no lucrativa, irregular receipts weigh less than a pension or rent, and savings are shown by a bank certificate, not a statement. That is covered in each permit guide and at the meeting.
